HBNU Vice President Prof. Dr. Yu Xiang is elected to be a member of Academia Europaea

Recently, the Academia Europaea announced the newly elected members in 2020. Professor Yu Xiang, Vice President of Hubei Normal University, is in the list.


Academia Europaea, jointly initiated by the European Ministers of Science, British Royal Society and other national academies representing the highest academic level in European countries, is an international scientific organization established in 1988. Academia Europaea covers four major science disciplines, namely Humanities, Social and Related Sciences, Exact Sciences and Life Sciences, with a total of 23 departments. Its headquarters is located in London, UK.


The members of Academia Europaea are mainly selected from the members of the national academies of European countries, while some outstanding members are also selected from countries outside Europe. Currently, Academia Europaea members include 74 Nobel Prize winners, 15 Fields Medal winners, and 7 Turing Prize winners. The members are selected once a year, nominated by European academicians, reviewed by correspondence, voted by the academic groups and departments, and finally approved by the Council of the Academia Europaea.


Chinese members of Academia Europaea include Chen Zhu, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Bai Chunli, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhang Yaping, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Li Can, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a researcher of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Yu Jihong, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor of Jilin University.


Professor Yu Xiang also serves as Director of the Sino-German Intellectual Property Institute of the School of Management of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Director of the Sino-European Institute of Intellectual Property of HUST, the review expert of the key talent introduction projects of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, the national intellectual property leading talent, Humboldt Fellow, Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, the First and Second President of the Chinese Alumni Association of Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), Visiting Professor or Chair Professor of many universities at home and abroad, a consulting expert of the intellectual property trial for Hubei Higher People’s Court, Chief Expert of Yu Xiang  Workstation of Yunnan Province, Chief Expert of Academician Workstation of Xiongxing Chemical Co., Ltd. of Jingmen City, Hubei Province. He is also concurrently a member of the Standing Committee and the Legislative Affairs Committee of Hubei Provincial People's Congress, a member of the Central Committee and Vice Chairman of Hubei Provincial Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang.




Professor Yu Xiang’s research achievements in the fields of Intellectual Property Rights Related to International Trade, Patent Strategy and Technological Innovation and the proposed methods for sharing and using intellectual property rights play a positive role in coordinating, maintaining and promoting international scientific and technological cooperation and fair trade. The legislative amendments proposed by his research have been adopted by China's Patent Law and Customs Intellectual Property Protection Regulations.


Professor Yu Xiang was successively appointed by the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China as Head of the Chinese Intellectual Property Expert Group of the China-US government cooperation project Clean Energy Research Center (CERC), and was appointed by the Management Center of China Agenda 21st Century as Chinese intellectual property rights leader in the China-EU government cooperation project CO2 Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS). Professor Yu Xiang has published more than 160 academic papers in English, German, Japanese and Chinese in authoritative journals in the field of international intellectual property such as IIC, GRUR Int., EIPR, Journal of World Intellectual Property, and in important academic journals at home and abroad, including Technology Forecasting and Social Change, Journal of Technology Transfer, Energy Procedia, Scientific Research Management, Intellectual Property, International Trade, Journal of Information.
