The College of Economics, Management and Law was formerly the Department of Political Science established in 1974, which was renamed the Department of Political Science, Law and Economics in 2003 and then was divided into the College of Economics and Management and the College of Political Science and Law in 2008. In 2019, to meet the needs of the Double Frist Class Initiative, these two colleges merged into one and took the current name. At present, the college has a full range of disciplines, strong faculty, fruitful research results, full-fledged hardware facilities and a large number of outstanding talents. It is one of the colleges with the strongest comprehensive strength and the greatest social influence in Hubei Normal University.
The College offers masters’ programs in 2 of its first-level disciplines (Applied Economics, Law) and 4 of its secondary disciplines (Economics & Statistics, Management & Statistics, Corporate Social Work and Justice & Social Work). The College owns 10 provincial teaching and research platforms, including Resource Environment (Hubei Provincial Advantageous Distinctive Discipline Cluster), the Research Center for Transformation & Development of Resource-Exhausted Cities (the Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences in Universities and Colleges of Hubei), the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Economics & Management (Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Universities and Colleges of Hubei), VR Experimental Teaching Center of Economic Management (Hubei VR Experimental Teaching Center), Strategic Emerging (Pillar) Industrial Talent Training Program of Colleges and Universities in Hubei Province specialized in International Trade (Logistics-oriented), Hubei Outstanding Legal Talents Collaborative Education Program, the University Student Entrepreneurial Center of Information Technology (Provincial University Student Entrepreneurial Center), the provincial resource-sharing course on Political Economics, Hubei Graduate Workstation and Disciplines with “Chutian Scholar” Post. There are also some affiliated institutes and centres including the Institute of Urban Development under the Huangshi Branch of Hubei Academy of Social Sciences, Huangshi New Rural Construction Research Center, the Local Legislation Research Center of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Huangshi City, the Research Center for Prosecutorial Theory of the People's Procuratorate of Huangshi City.
The vigorous and striving teaching and research team at the College of Economics, Management and Law consists of 70 members, including 10 professors and 27 associate professors. 30 teachers have doctor’s degrees, 21 teachers are Master’s tutors, 7 teachers are with overseas educational background. The College has also received a number of experts and scholars as visiting professors. In the last five years, the teachers in the College have participated in more than 26 provincial & Ministerial projects or projects sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation and National Social Science Fund, 50 research projects at provincial levels and over 100 horizontal research projects. They have published more than 100 academic monographs and textbooks and around 400 papers in the core academic journals. They have won over 70 provincial and municipal awards. Scientific research of the College has gradually formed a pattern of one, two, three, four, that is, one principle: learning the new experiences from our province, our country, even the world, to serve the development of Huangshi; two directions: urban transformation & development, and new rural construction; three platforms: the Research Center for the Transformation & Development of Resource-exhausted Cities, the Institute of Urban Development, and the New Rural Construction Research Center; four research teams: Urban Transformation Research Team, Urban Development Research Team, Enterprise Development Research Team, and New Rural Construction Research Team.
The College currently provides courses for 9 undergraduate programmes, including economics, law, international economics and trade, financial management, administration, economic statistics, law-English dual degree, urban management, and logistics engineering. There are more than 1500 full-time postgraduate and undergraduate students, more than 340 students of various types of vocational and continuing education, and more than 400 students of minor degrees. The total number of the students reaches about 2,300. The College attaches special attention to the cultivation of talent quality. The students have participated in a number of national and provincial innovation and entrepreneurship projects, and have won many national and provincial awards for their academic papers, surveys and reports. The employment rate of the graduates in the past three years has remained above 94%, and many graduates have successively admitted by famous universities for postgraduate studies.
