The School of Materials Science and Engineering of Hubei Normal University was formally established in 2023, formerly known as the Institute of Advanced Materials, led by the then president Professor Li Hong, and hired Professor Liu Junming, a Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education and Professor of Nanjing University, as the part-time dean. The establishment of the School of Materials Science and Engineering marks the beginning of a new chapter in the transformation of Hubei Normal University's materials discipline platform from a research-oriented research institution to a teaching and research institution.
There are 35 faculty members and expert consultants in the School of Materials, including 8 professors, 7 associate professors, 5 doctoral supervisors and 20 master supervisors. There are 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 Distinguished Professors of Changjiang Scholars, 4 winners of National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, 1 Young Top Talents of Hubei Province, 1 Chutian Scholars Distinguished Professors, 5 Chutian Students, 4 Cihu Scholars Distinguished Chair professors, and 4 Cihu Scholars young talents. More than 90% of the full-time teachers have a doctoral degree.
The college has a total area of 15,000 square meters, more than 1,000 instruments and equipment, including 55 large equipment, the total value of more than 40 million yuan, has Huangshi advanced semiconductor materials and devices key laboratory, has built Hubei Normal University analysis and testing center, Hubei Key Laboratory of optoelectronic conversion Materials and Devices is under construction. The school has four research teams, focusing on new information materials and devices, new energy materials and devices, new battery materials and quantum materials and applications, covering physics, chemistry, electronics, biology, engineering and other multidisciplinary fields, to overcome a number of key scientific and engineering problems. Up to now, a total of more than 60 scientific research projects have been approved, with competitive scientific research funds of nearly 10 million yuan, of which 1 national major research project sub-project has been approved, 16 National Natural Science Foundation projects (3 surface projects, 13 youth projects), and 15 provincial and ministerial projects. The school has published more than 190 SCI papers in first-class international journals such as Nature Communications, Nano Energy, Physical Review B and Applied Physics Letters, and authorized more than 10 national invention patents. Won a total of 3 school-level teaching innovation awards, including 1 first prize and 2 third prizes.
The comprehensive promotion of the three full education has been effective. In 2021, the School was successfully approved as a first-level master's program in Materials Science and engineering, which consists of three research directions: materials science, new energy materials and devices, and materials physics and chemistry. In 2023, the Ministry of Education officially approved the construction of materials science and engineering undergraduate major. Since the enrollment of master students relying on the optical engineering major, a total of 43 graduate students have been trained, and 20 have graduated, of which 4 have successfully applied for doctoral studies in the University of Houston, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Southeast University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and many have won national scholarships and other honors and awards during the school. The college encourages students to actively participate in scientific research work, consolidate professional basic knowledge, improve scientific research and innovation ability, and provide high-level engineering and technical talents for the country.
